About us

Vibrant Healthcare Alliance

Since 2017, Vibrant Healthcare Alliance has continued the legacy of community support inherited from its parent organizations, the Anne Johnston Health Station and Tobias Attendant care.  From four locations, Vibrant staff provide primary and and preventive health care and attendant services to the broader community.

Although many of our service users identify as vulnerable, isolated, or living with complex physical and mental health concerns, we believe that a vibrant, independent life is possible for everyone, regardless of circumstances.

Independent Living Philosophy

Independent Living is founded on the right of people with disabilities to:

  • Live with dignity in their chosen community;
  • Participate in all aspects of their life; and
  • Control and make decisions about their own lives.

The IL vision and philosophy have been articulated through the Independent Living movement – a network of individuals and community-based resource centres across the country, supported by a national organization, Independent Living Canada.

The IL movement differs from a traditional service providing organizations by emphasizing peer support, self-direction, and community integration by and for people with disabilities themselves. This information below provides the five historical views of people with disabilities in Canadian society. The IL model embraces the notion that rights and responsibilities are shared between citizens and the state, focussing on building a country based on the principles of inclusion, equity, affordability and justice.

Our Mission and Vision

Our vision is empowering independence, health and well-being together. Our mission is building healthier communities using integrated services to empower individuals living with complex issues.

Anne Johnston Health Station

Gaining a strong advocate in 1995 from then city councillor Anne Johnston, the organization successfully obtained government funding to establish a community health care organization focused on serving individuals with physical disabilities. Over the years the Anne Johnston Health Station has continued to evolve and enhance the range of primary health care services it provides its users, including individuals living with a variety of complex issues.

Tobias House Attendant Care Inc.

Emerging from the vision to provide non-profit housing and services to people with disabilities, in 1990, Tobias House Attendant Care Inc. received charitable status. In 1992 the organization began providing personal support services to individuals from its first location. Now operating from multiple locations the organization continues to promote independent living, inclusiveness and compassionate care for its residents.
